March 16, 2003

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Kingston, Tennessee
Second Sunday in Lent
March 16, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.

PRELUDEI Surrender All Weeden

CALL TO WORSHIP
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 488The God of Abraham Praise

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN - Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
“For the sake of the joy that was set before him Jesus endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his eat at the right hand of the throne of God.” Our faith depends on him from start to finish, and he unceasingly intercedes on our behalf. Therein abides our hope and our assurance.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Hymn # 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Eternal God, you are the power behind all minds: behind the ability to think and reason, behind all understanding of the truth. Eternal God, you are the power behind the cross of Christ: behind the weakness, the torture and the death, behind unconquerable love. Eternal God, we worship and adore you. Amen.
