BARBER, DORIS - 84, formerly of Kingston, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 24, 2009.
Mrs. Barber was a resident of Greenfield Senior Living in Oak Ridge and passed away at NHC Healthcare Center of Oak Ridge.
She was preceded in death by parents Valentine L. and Margaret G. Pfeifer; sister-in-law, Lucille S. Pfeifer; beloved husband, E. John Barber; and eldest son, Thomas A. Barber.
Doris Barber leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, Wallace V. Pfeifer; three children and their spouses, Gail B. and Phillip E. King, Daniel J. and Laura A. Barber, and James W. and Mary C. Barber. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mrs. Barber was active in church and community for many years. She was a soloist in the choir of Bethel Presbyterian Church of Kingston, sang in several community and multi-church choruses, and served as an Elder. Mrs. Barber, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, taught literature and served 19 years as school librarian at Kingston Jr. High and Cherokee Middle Schools.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December, 29, from 5-7 pm at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Kingston, TN. The funeral service will follow at 7 pm. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 30, at Roane Memorial Gardens at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church library fund in her memory. Kyker Funeral Home of Kingston is in charge of arrangements.
