Sunday Morning Worship Service
January 20, 2008
TO OUR GUESTS During the next months (likely until at least the end of 2008), as our campus renovation project takes place, we will be sharing facilities and services with our next-door neighbors - Kingston United Methodist Church. The bulletin you see here nearly every week will reflect the congregations' combined Sunday service and the announcements that are related to Bethel.

GATHERING AND GREETING OF GOD’S PEOPLE
Praise Chorus: There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit
#398 Presbyterian Hymnal # 334 Methodist Hymnal
There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord;
There are sweet expressions on each face, And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.
Sweet Holy Spirit, Sweet Heavenly Dove, Stay right here with us, Filling us,
Filling us with Your love; And for these blessings We lift our hearts in praise.
Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived When we shall leave this place.
Chiming of the Hour
Call to Worship
Leader: We worship the God who inhabits our world and indwells our lives.
People: We need not look up to find God; we need only look around: within ourselves,
beyond ourselves, into the eyes of another.
Leader: We need not listen for a distant thunder to find God; we need only listen to the music
of life, the words of children, the questions of the curious, the rhythm of a heartbeat.
People: We worship the God who inhabits our world and who indwells our lives.
Opening Prayer
We turn to You often, O God, as we seek through prayer to find the meaning of life. Sometimes it’s a fervent prayer in the midst of serious mediation, but more often it’s a fleeting prayer on the run. We pray for patience when there are too many things to be done. We pray that You will awaken us to hear the cries of the poor, the homeless, the broken-hearted. Help us to redirect more of our resources to clothe the naked and feed the hungry. Mold us, O God, and open our hearts and minds to be willing vessels of Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
*Hymn of Praise Great Is Thy Faithfulness
# 276 Presbyterian Hymnal (Verses 1 & 3) # 140 Methodist Hymnal
*Call to Confession:
When we are in bondage, God offers to set us free. When we are poor, God in Christ identifies with us and offers us riches money cannot buy. When we are lonely and discouraged, the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, pointing us beyond ourselves. Everyone who calls on God, our Creator and Redeemer, for help will be saved. Let us together seek the healing only Christ can provide.
*Prayer of Confession:
O God, our God, we celebrate the new life which You have given us. We are experiencing broken lives being made whole, old wounds of alienation healing over, and tired spirits being rejuvenated with new vision. Gracious God, we are so grateful for the purpose and possibilities You have placed before us. Yet, there are times when doubts overcome hope, cynicism replaces dedication, the world’s values have captured us more than Your values. Forgive us for those times, we pray. Help us let go of the past, that we might move joyfully into a new future, a future that points to Your love and justice . . . (Silent confession)
Lord have mercy upon us,
Christ have mercy upon us,
Lord have mercy upon us.
*Assurance of Pardon:
Leader: In Christ, we are given new life.
People: The old is gone away, the new is before us.
Leader: In Christ we are freed to live more fully in the present.
People: Our future is open, in the living love of our Redeemer! Thanks be to God!

RESPONSE TO THE WORD
A Covenant Prayer of Recommitment to Justice
Leader: You are our servant God, and we would be Your serving people.
People: O God, Our Sustainer, search our hearts and reveal to us our sinfulness, all the ways that we contribute to injustice and to self-destroying bondage. Give us deep courage to find the true path of your way, ready to give our very selves as living sacrifices for your will. We have heard Your calling. Hear us now as we make our pledge.
Leader: You are our God and we are your people. We pledge ourselves now to pursue relentlessly that living, breathing justice which transforms persons and peoples. To Your will for justice we recommit ourselves and pledge ourselves, our funds, our actions. Through Christ Jesus we pray. Amen.

TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome from Kingston United Methodist and Bethel Presbyterian Churches. We have covenanted together for 2008 to share in worship, fellowship, study and service. We invite you to participate in signing the Friendship Folders (Green for Methodist Blue for Presbyterian), adding your address and phone number and please note if you would like to receive a church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we say “sins…sin against us” rather than “debts...” or “trespasses…”; prayer requests can be noted on the cards provided in the pew racks, please put those in the offering plates and both churches will be notified of your request. A team of Pastors will be available to pray with you after worship (in the front chancel area). We are glad you are with us. Please worship with us again!

Wheelchair Access into KUMC
For anyone needing wheelchair access into the KUMC sanctuary or rooms on the sanctuary level, a ramp is available on the Kentucky Street side of the main church building, along with multiple handicapped parking spaces. Once you go up the ramp and into the side door, enter the hallway, then turn left, and you will enter near the front of the sanctuary. For events in the fellowship hall, the driveway between the sanctuary building and the parsonage goes around to the rear of the fellowship hall and a ground level entrance; there are parking spaces, several of which are marked handicapped parking.
