TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Third Sunday after the Epiphany
January 21, 2007
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O praise the Lord with me,

Let us exalt God’s name together.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.

The decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple of heart.

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #487  When Morning Gilds the Skies   Laudes Domini

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

God of freedom, Jesus came to bring good news, to mend and to heal, to release and to redeem, and to proclaim your reign. We confess that we have ignored his message. We remain captive to sin, bruised and broken by our transgressions. We are convinced that the news is always bad, and that we are forever stuck where we are, as we are. Help us to hear the truth of the gospel. Inspire us with your liberating word. Let your Spirit cleanse us and change us so that we may receive all that you have declared in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Thanks be to God,

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

MINUTE FOR MISSION   Design & Development Update   Ken Dungan

FIRST LESSON    Psalm 19

ANTHEM

SECOND LESSON   Luke 4:14-21

SERMON   Beginnings   Rev. Bill Shenk

*HYMN #361   How Firm a Foundation   Foundation

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he appeared first to the women, then to Peter, and to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end; he is our Lord and our God. Amen.

SHARING OF CONCERNS AND PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OFFERING

*DOXOLOGY

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN #476   O Worship the King, All Glorious Above!   Lyons

*CHARGE AND BLESSING

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Hymn #539 vs. 1

Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name We Raise
Savior, again to Thy dear name we raise
With one accord our parting hymn of praise.
We stand to bless Thee ere our worship cease;
And, now departing, wait Thy word of peace.

*POSTLUDE

 *All who are able may stand.
