TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 25, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

PRELUDE    For I Shall See Him    Brower

CALL TO WORSHIP

In caring and compassion, God’s arms embrace us when we feel weak and alone.
Let us open our arms to share that embrace with others.
With ideas and inspiration, God pushes us to grow and thrive.
Let us give that seed new roots by planting it in the soil of others’ lives.
With divine generosity, God shares all creation with us.
Let us share that bounty with all for whom God created it.
God calls us as partners to build a world of joy and hope.
Let us build a world where our lives, and those of our sisters and brothers, may resound in praise of our gracious God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 466    O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing    Azmon

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Let us affirm:
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – from “the Confession of 1967”

In Jesus Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself. Jesus Christ is God with us. He is the eternal Son of the Father, who became flesh and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. Christ is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. The work of God–-the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-–is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, the human family, and the world. Therefore, the church calls us to be reconciled to God and to one another.
