TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

The Lord our God is a welcoming God,
Standing with arms outstretched to those gathering here.
The Lord our God is a seeking God,
Calling in love to those who are wondering.
The Lord our God is a hearing God,
With ears that are open to our prayers of need and our hymns of praise.
The Lord our God is a loving God,
For Christ lives and offers us life abundant.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 353    Great God, Your Love Has Called Us Here

Das Neugeborne Kindelein

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Loving God, with silent persistence and prophetic witness you have loved every person and all of creation. You ache every time we destroy beauty, every time we harm one another, every time greed squashes kindness. You see when we ignore the outstretched hand and turn a deaf ear to cries for help. Merciful God, forgive us and let us take up the challenge to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly on the earth. Forgive us and let your Spirit fill us with courage. Forgive us and remind us of the ways you bless us. Never let us forget your all-embracing love! In Jesus' name. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Hear the Good News! Who is in the position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has gone; a new life has begun. Know the Good News…
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn # 579

OLD TESTAMENT READING   Jeremiah 1:4-10
                                                       Psalm 71: 1-6 (Read Responsively)

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed.
In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; incline your ear to me and save me.
Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; you are my crag and my stronghold.
Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor.
For you are my hope, O Lord God, my confidence since I was young.
I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; my praise shall be always of you.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
          (Genesis 22:1; 1 Samuel 3:10; Matthew 4:19-20; Mark 9:24; Mark 5:30-34)

We believe Abraham was converted when God called to test him and Abraham said, "Here I am."
We believe Samuel responded when God called "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
We believe the disciples began a new life when Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people," and they immediately left their nets and followed him.
We believe a father made a statement of faith when Jesus acted to heal his son and the father of the child cried out, "I believe; help my unbelief!"
We believe a woman was healed when she touched Jesus through the crowd and knowing what had happened to her, came forward in fear and trembling.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the power at work within us to accomplish Abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
