Sunday Morning Worship Service
February 3, 2008

TO OUR GUESTS – During the next months (likely until at least the end of 2008), as our campus renovation project takes place, we will be sharing facilities and services with our next-door neighbors - Kingston United Methodist Church. The bulletin you see here nearly every week will reflect the congregations' combined Sunday service and the announcements (when available) that are related to Bethel.

Chiming of the Hour

Call to Worship

In a dark room, we seek the light of a lamp.

In the dark night, we await the light of dawn.

When the moon disappears, we watch for the morning star.

We seek, we await, we watch for the risen and glorified Christ.

Prayer of the Day

*Hymn   When in Our Music God is Glorified   PH #264

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

Glorious God, it is good to be here with you in the comfort of this sanctuary, among friends, assured of your grace and love for us. How tempted we are to abide in what feels safe and familiar! How hesitant we are to venture forth into the unknown. As Christ turned his eyes from the mountaintop to the valley, turn our eyes toward places we shudder to go places where people struggle with brokenness and pain, dark places where we might bear your love and light. Transfigure us, so we might represent your kingdom well. Until the new day dawns and the morning star rises in our hearts, sustain us by your presence and your power

  ….(silent confession).

Lord have mercy upon us, Kyrie
Christ have mercy upon us, PH #572
Lord have mercy upon us.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith   The Apostles’ Creed (Ecumenical Version)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Great Thanksgiving and the Lord’s Prayer

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise….
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with the heavenly choirs and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and hearth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord…..

With thanksgiving we offer our very selves to you to be a living and holy sacrifice, dedicated to your service. Christ is the bread of life:

When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory.

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us….
All glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever…..

Our Father who art in heaven… Amen.

“Wherever we taste the truth God is there” St. Augustine

TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome from Kingston United Methodist and Bethel Presbyterian Churches. We have covenanted together for 2008 to share in worship, fellowship, study and service. We invite you to participate in signing the Friendship Folders (Green for Methodist – Blue for Presbyterian), adding your address and phone number and please note if you would like to receive a church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we say “sins…sin against us” rather than “debts...” or “trespasses…”; prayer requests can be noted on the cards provided in the pew racks, please put those in the offering plates and both churches will be notified of your request. A team of Pastors will be available to pray with you after worship (in the front chancel area). We are glad you are with us. Please worship with us again!

Wheelchair Access into KUMC

For anyone needing wheelchair access into the KUMC sanctuary or rooms on the sanctuary level, a ramp is available on the Kentucky Street side of the main church building, along with multiple handicapped parking spaces. Once you go up the ramp and into the side door, enter the hallway, then turn left, and you will enter near the front of the sanctuary. For events in the fellowship hall, the driveway between the sanctuary building and the parsonage goes around to the rear of the fellowship hall and a ground level entrance; there are parking spaces, several of which are marked handicapped parking.

Fund for Edith Miles

A fund has been established through Bethel at Citizens National Bank to help defray medical and other costs for Edith Miles and her family associated with Edith’s hospitalization at Vanderbilt University and St. Mary’s Hospital.  Checks should be made payable to “Bethel Presbyterian Church – Mission Outreach Fund” and on the memo line add “Health & Welfare”. Checks may be dropped off at Citizens National Bank or left at Bethel’s church office.

Personal Hearing Aid

The Kingston United Methodist Church has personal hearing aid devices available for use during worship.  They need to order additional devices and would like to order enough to accommodate Bethel folks who need one.  Please call the church office (376-6340) to request one of these devices, if you need it.

Lenten Study Offerings

Studies begin the week of February 10th, 2008. Other Studies are being planned to fit the needs and desires of the participants. We are also looking for people to host Lenten Small Groups. Please let Pat Harvey know if you would be interested. Complete a Registration Form in your bulletin and place in the offering plate. Due to a lack of response in a Thursday Lenten Study, the Tuesday morning study group will be examining Luke’s account of the crucifixion and resurrection. If you are interested in joining this group Tuesday mornings at 10:00, please contact Martha Rogers or the KUMC church office, 376-6337.

Souper Bowl

On Sunday February 3rd, 140 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game.  There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter and a warm meal.  Please join young people around the US as they demonstrate God’s love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring (www.souperbowl.org ).  It’s a simple, drop $1 (or more) in the soup pot as you leave worship on February 3rd.  Those who need help may not know that you cared, but God will. And our young people are developing hearts for giving that can last a lifetime.  Please support their efforts – Money collected will be donated to the local Hands of Mercy Food Ministry.
