TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany
February 11, 2007
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O give thanks, for the Lord is good.

God’s love endures forever.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

They are like trees planted by streams of water,

that flourish even when the drought comes.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #446  Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken   Austrian Hymn

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Sustaining God, You would have us deeply rooted in you, finding strength in your word and nourishment in your grace. More often, though, we are like chaff, blown here and there by the winds of circumstance. Forgive our lack of permanency and our failure to hold fast to our commitments. Grow faith in us that we might be firmly planted in the promises of the gospel, released from sin and open to the life you have shown us in Jesus Chris. Amen.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Thanks be to God,

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

MINUTE FOR MISSION   Design & Development Update   Ken Dungan

FIRST LESSON    Psalm 1

MOMENT WITH THE CHILDREN   Rev. Pat Harvey

ANTHEM

SECOND LESSON   Jeremiah 17:5-13

SERMON   Standing on the Promises   Rev. Bill Shenk

*HYMN #276   Great Is Thy Faithfulness   Faithfulness

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

God keeps his promises and gives us hope.

In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God kept his promises. All that we can ever hope for was present in Christ. But the work of God in Christ is not over. God calls us to hope for more than we have yet seen. The hope God gives us is ultimate confidence that supports us when lesser hopes fail us. In Christ, God gives hope for a new heaven and earth, certainty of victory over death, assurance of mercy and judgment beyond death. This hope gives us courage for the present struggle. Amen.

SHARING OF CONCERNS AND PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OFFERING

*DOXOLOGY   Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow   Hymn #59

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN #170   The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want   Crimond

*CHARGE AND BLESSING

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Now Thank We All Our God   Hymn #555 vs. 1

Now thank we all our God With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done, In whom this world rejoices;
Who, from our mothers’ arms, Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love, And still is ours today.

Farewell Banquet

We would like to invite all of our Bethel family to a banquet on Sunday, February 25 after church in our Fellowship Hall to honor our cherished and talented organist, Mary Ann Hensley. Mary Ann will leave Bethel after more than 18 years of faithful service to take a job as organist and choir director at a church closer to her home in Lenoir City. For entertainment during the banquet, we are asking for people to prepare a song, poem, skit, dance, etc. to show Mary Ann how much we love her.

It’s time for the Loaves and Fishes Experience again! This year it will be held March 16 – 17 at Maryville College.
