TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Bethel Presbyterian Church
First Sunday of Lent
February 13, 2005

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes;

Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Come, now, let us reason together, says the Lord; though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 476    O Worship The King, All Glorious Above!   Lyon

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful and everlasting God, creator of the universe and giver of every good and perfect gift: we confess our sins before You and one another. We have not always received your gifts with thanksgiving; we envy the blessings of our neighbors and scorn those who have less than we have; we are prone to jealousy and boasting; we do not forgive others as freely as You have forgiven us. We neglect to take care of ourselves; we pass by the stranger and fail to show kindness to the poor. Have mercy on us, O God. Cleanse us of selfish desires; renew our trust in You; pardon our sins; restore us to the joy of our salvation. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord . . .

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn # 579

SERMON  A Line in the Sand

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he appeared first to the women, then to Peter, and to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end; he is our Lord and our God. Amen.

*HYMN # 81   Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days    St. Flavian
