Sunday Morning Worship Service
February 20, 2005
TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRELUDE
CALL TO WORSHIP
Seek the Lord while he may be found;
Call on him while he is near.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Let us glory in the cross of Jesus Christ. Through him we have salvation.
Cross the Christ, tree of hope.
For us he became obedient even to death on a cross. Because of this God exalted him above every name. See if there is any wicked way in me.
Cross of Christ, tree of hope, wisdom of God.
When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to myself.
Cross of Christ, tree of hope, wisdom of God. We worship and praise you, O Christ; by your cross the world is redeemed.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
*HYMN # 244 Let Us with a Gladsome Mind Monkland
CALL TO CONFESSION
As we turn our hearts to the Lord in a time of confession we remember the words of the prophet Isaiah; Seek the Lord while he may be found, call on him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Let us look to the Lord in a time of personal confession.
(Silent Prayer)
Let us pray together:
Most merciful God, we your church confess that often our spirit has not been that of Christ. Where we have failed to love each other as he loved us, where we have pledged loyalty to him with our lips and then betrayed, deserted, or denied him, forgive us. By your Spirit make us faithful in every time of trial, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
*HYMN #100 vs.1-2 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Rockingham
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! For those whom God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. Give thanks, for . . .
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
*HYMN #100 vs.3-4 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Rockingham
See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did eer such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

*LITANY FOR LENT O Christ, out of your fullness we have all received grace upon grace. You are our eternal hope; you are patient and full of mercy; you are generous to all who call upon you.
All Sing:
Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
O Christ, fountain of life and holiness, you have taken away our sins. On the cross you were wounded for our transgressions and were bruised for our inequities. O Christ, obedient unto death, source of all comfort, our life and our resurrection, our peace and reconciliation, save us.
All Sing:
When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near;
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
Holy God, your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world and brought humanity the fight of reconciliation by the suffering and death he endured. Teach those who bear his name to follow the example he gave us. May our faith, hope, and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life through Christ our Lord.
