TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
First Sunday in Lent
February 29, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

PRELUDE    Dear Lord and Father of Mankind   Maher

CALL TO WORSHIP

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
try me and know my thoughts!
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Let us worship God!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 81    Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days   St. Flavian

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained, and great when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON1 Tim. 1:15; 1 Peter 2:24

Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*LITANY FOR LENT

O Christ, out of your fullness we have all received grace upon grace. You are our eternal hope;
you are patient and full of mercy; you are generous to all who call upon you.
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, fountain of life and holiness, you have taken away our sins. On the cross you were wounded for our transgressions and were bruised for our iniquities.
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, obedient unto death, source of all comfort, our life and our resurrection, our peace and reconciliation:
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, Savior of all who trust you, hope of all who die for you, and joy of all the saints:
Save us, Lord.
Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.
God of love, as in Jesus Christ you gave yourself to us, so may we give ourselves to you, living according to your holy will. Keep our feet firmly in the way where Christ leads us; make our mouths speak the truth that Christ teaches us; fill our bodies with the life that is Christ within us.
In his holy name we pray. Amen.
