TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 13, 2005

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O Lord, open my lips

And my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Come, let us worship our God of steadfast love and hope.

God, breathe life into us and let us live.

Set our minds on your holy spirit of life and peace.

We gather here in the hope of God’s holy word and the gift of new life.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 483    Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above Mit   Freuden Zart

CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

(Silent Prayer)

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Spirit of the Living God, breathe fresh life on us this day. Forgive us our sins of impatience, anger, gossip and arrogance. We confess that these sins steal life from others around us and create chaos rather than peace. Forgive us our doubts and fears and the times when we cut you off and lose hope. Breathe upon these weary bones of ours and lift us up with the Spirit of life. Forgive us the times when we feel you have let us down, when, like Martha, we feel like you’ve just been too late to help us out. Save us from ourselves, for we are often our worst enemy. Open us up to new life. Give us courage to believe in you, and boldness in living your will for us. Through Christ, Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Give thanks for God, for

in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – from A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen.
