THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Second Sunday of Easter
April 27, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hang out your hallelujahs! The tomb is open, the Roman guard gone, death defeated. The Holy One of life walks again, comforting the troubled, healing the sick, forgiving the sinners, spreading the gospel through the lips and lives of those made new. --Rita Snowden

PRELUDE  The Strife is O’er      Cassler

CALL TO WORSHIP
      Astounding Good News.
            A surprise beyond expectation.
      Christ is alive!
            Christ is risen indeed!
Easter is God's light shining in our darkness.
Easter is hope washing over despair.
      Easter is joy brimming over,
Flowing into each day and setting alleluias loose.
      Astounding Good News
That follows us each moment and causes hearts to sing.

HYMN # 104  Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna!

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN – Redeeming God, you bring life out of dead ends, and hope in the midst of despair. Forgive us for doubting that you are still at work even in the darkest hour, even in the most painful moments. Forgive us for our hesitant action, our cautious compassion, our too-frequent reluctance. Redeeming God, teach us a stillness that leads to acts of kindness and clarity of vision. Shape in us a trust that leads to faithful witness and bold compassion. Form us in your love that loosens our worry and eases our anger. Make us true disciples filled with love, acting with justice, and living out hope. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE    Gloria Patri    Hymn # 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe in God, Who lights the dawn to chase away the darkness; Who rolls away each stone of doubt; Who surprises us with incredible gifts of family and friends, silence and laughter; Who raises us from sadness and despair to the possibilities of blessing and joy. We believe in Jesus, Friend of the poor and searcher for the lost, Who comes to us in our grief and longing, calls us by name and sends us on the paths of peace to speak of an awesome love that is not overcome by death. We believe in the Holy Spirit, The hidden partner, the gentle messenger of God, Who fills our every breath with blessing; Who guides us in the dark, beckons us to do good, speaks to us in dream and image, and watches over us with tender compassion. We believe in the church, An instrument of God in this present moment, striving for justice, celebrating in joy, clawing at despair, living in hope, praying for healing and forever proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel!
