THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Fourth Sunday of Easter
May 11, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE  Reflections of the Cross        Carl

CALL TO WORSHIP
Come, let us gather as a community of God’s people to worship our gracious God, the Creator of our earthly home.
This we know: the earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth.
All of God’s creation is connected—people with the land; people with one another; rural, urban and suburban communities. Whatever befalls one, befalls the others.
Together we are strands in the web of life—part of the global community.
Let us respect that web and move within it with compassion and justice.
Now, let us seek God’s wisdom by worshiping God, our wonderful Creator.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

HYMN # 555  Now Thank We All Our God        Rinkart

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN – We confess to you, O God, and to one another that each day, try as we might, we fail to keep our promise to love you and one another. We are captives of sin and are not capable of freeing ourselves. We confess that we do not live according to your will in caring for the land and the air or in distributing the blessings of food with which you have blessed us. We have been negligent in caring for your creation and all the people of our global community. Forgive our selfishness and our continual desire to put ourselves first. Dear God, hear our confession and help us to see the broader picture of life and our responsibility of being your faithful stewards. Help us to lead lives that bear witness to your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Rich in mercy, God heard the people’s cries and, for our sake, gave Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son to die for our sins. Through this gift, God freed us from the bondage of sin and now calls us to go out in the world in mission and service. Friends, believe the Good News!

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE    Gloria Patri    Hymn # 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – A Statement of Faith, Presbyterians for Renewal of Creation
We live in a time of wide-spread catastrophic destruction of the natural world and human communities. Our faith compels us to respond. Empowered by our rich biblical and theological heritage: We trust that God -- who created Heaven and earth and pronounced it good -- calls us to sacrificial, loving, and joyful participation in caring for the fullness of that creation. We trust that Christ -- whose incarnation reveals God's love and compassion, who suffered death that we might have life -- calls us to carry on the holy work of transforming brokenness into wholeness. We trust that the Spirit -- whose presence in trial and rejoicing moves us into deeper awareness of God's reign -- calls us to witness boldly as servants and prophets to our age.
