TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 21, 2006
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

O give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good;

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Sing to God a new song, for God has done marvelous things.

All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord! Break forth into joyful song and sing praises!

God judges the world with righteousness. Let the earth resound with the praise of God!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #482   Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty   Lobe Den Herren

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Patient and loving God, in our sin we get it all wrong. We see your commandments as burdens, not gifts. We look at the needy and fail to see Christ’s face. We work frantically to earn your favor instead of being still and enjoying your love. We set our hearts on the wrong goals and our feet on the wrong paths. Even our best deeds we do for ourselves more than for you. Forgive us, gracious and loving God. Cleanse our hearts of all sin, and let the Spirit of Jesus Christ renew us. So may we grow in the gracious knowledge of your love made clear in Christ our Lord. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! God has forgiven each one of us and calls us to take parts in the drama of redeeming love. Praise God, who accepts and uses our very human lives in the unfolding story of salvation and new life.

Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING   Psalm 19   Responsive Reading

The heavens are telling the glory of God;

And the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours forth speech,

And night to night declares knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words;

Their voice is not heard;

Yet their voice goes out through all the earth,

And their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes forth like a bride-groom leaving his chamber,

And like a strong man runs its course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them;

And there is nothing hid from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;

The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;

The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever;

The ordinances of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is thy servant warned;

In keeping them there is great reward.

But who can discern his errors?

Clear thou me from hidden faults.

Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins;

Let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

And innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostle’s Creed (Traditional)   Hymnal Page #14

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
