TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Holy Trinity Sunday
June 6, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Worship the Lord with gladness.
And enter the Lord’s presence with songs of joy.

PRELUDE     In My Heart Roth

CALL TO WORSHIP

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called the children of God; and that is what we are.

We are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed.

Jesus continues to teach us through the Spirit of truth poured out upon us, and to transform us according to the creator’s intention for us.

As ongoing gift, the Spirit reveals the glory of Jesus our Lord, imparts to us knowledge and understanding, and instills the courage we need to be faithful followers of Jesus’ will and way.

Let us worship God and pray that we be prepared to receive this blessing.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 132   Come, Great God of All the Ages Abbot’s Leigh

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON PRAYER OFCONFESSION

Creating God, we are moved to admit we are an in-process people. And we confess we have both doubts and questions concerning your actions and purposes. We are often impatient to have answers, to have knowledge according to our will instead of trusting that there is loving wisdom in the timetable of your Spirit’s ongoing revelations of the truth. Forgive us the arrogance of such self-deception. Forgive us for allowing our faith to be a closed book rather than a story continuing to be written. Forgive us for being self-satisfied rather than open. Keep us eager to grow and serve according to your will. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The Spirit helps us to acknowledge and confess our sin, but also affirms within us the truth of God’s grace. In Christ Jesus, we are assured that our sin is forgiven. And by the power of the Spirit at work within us, we are continually being transformed into faithful and mature disciples of Jesus.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri    Hymn # 579

*PASSING OF THE PEACE –

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

SCRIPTURE John 16:12-15; Proverbs 8:1-4,22-31

SERMON   Continuing Education
The Reverend Marc Sherrod

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY   My Jesus, I Love Thee   Gordon

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED (TRADITIONAL)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN # 513   Let Us Break Bread Together

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, eternal and triune God, whom we worship as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In Jesus Christ you spoke the word that brought the world into being. By the Holy Spirit you brought order out of chaos and breathed life into your creatures. In parental love, you stood by us in spite of our disobedience, correcting us with gracious reproof, and welcoming us again into your loving embrace. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Born of Mary, he came to dwell among us, full of grace and truth. To all who believed, he gave power to become your children. In ministry among your own Jesus cared for all, forgiving their failures, healing their hurts, and nurturing their faith, giving himself in utter sacrifice for those he loved. He inspired ordinary folk to Spirit-filled living and displayed in his life, death, and rising again the power of your Spirit. We give you thanks that the Lord Jesus, on the night before he died, took bread, and after giving thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Remembering your gracious acts in Jesus Christ, we take from your creation this bread and this wine and joyfully celebrate his dying and rising, as we await the day of his coming. With thanksgiving we offer our very selves to you to be a living and holy sacrifice, dedicated to your service. Great is the mystery of faith:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your Spirit make us one with Christ that we may be one with all who share this feast, united in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ's body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world. Nurture us at this table, O God, that we may grow to the stature of Jesus Christ. Help us to love you above all else and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, demonstrating that love, in deed and word, toward all your children. Keep us faithful in your service until Christ comes in final victory and we shall feast with all your saints in the joy of your eternal realm. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE Nearer, My God, To Thee   Mason

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

HYMN # 138   Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!   Nicaea

*CHARGE AND BLESSING   God Be With You   Hymn # 540

God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you,
With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again. Amen.

*POSTLUDE   Rise Up, O Men of God   Williams

*All who are able may stand.

MISSION TRIP COUNTDOWN!

It is hard to believe…but on June 16th, twenty-two people from Bethel Church will be sent out in Mission!

Mark Banker and Jim Schall will be driving, Janet and Dave Nippert will meet us after a week at Ghost Ranch, and the rest of us will fly from Nashville on June 16th! We will arrive in Albuquerque, around 7:00 p.m. and drive to Holy Faith Episcopal Church in Santa Fe (where we will spend the night). The next morning we will see a few sights in Santa Fe and then travel on to Bandelier National Monument. In the afternoon we will arrive in Tierra Amarilla (a small town a few miles from the Colorado border in northern New Mexico)…that’s when the work begins!

The week will be filled with work, worship, fun and fellowship! Our Bethel Team will engage in an array of service activities from working with children, to installing shelving, cleaning carpets, framing a door, installing room dividers, creating a garden, repairing an adobe playhouse, constructing shelters for a rabbit, a pigeon and chicken…and helping create a nature walk! If that does not keep our team busy…we are working on “PLAN B” in the community! Some of us will work in a childcare center where we will delight the children with puppets and stories…and help the children make puppets of their own!

We are looking forward to seeing this beautiful part of the country – and the privilege of sharing the Good News of Jesus with out hands, hearts and minds!

Please continue to pray for our Mission Team…and thank you for all of your support! Without your assistance – we would not be serving in this way! THANK YOU!
