THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Pentecost Sunday
June 8, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
The love of God has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP    Psalm 104:24-35
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
           And also with you.
How manifold are the works of God! In wisdom he made all things.
The earth is full of God’s creatures, the ocean too is filled with life both great and small.
All of these look to God to give them their food in due season. When God gives it - they gather it up and are filled with good things. When he hides his face, they are dismayed.
When God sends forth his Spirit they are created, his breath brings life to them all.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live.
I will praise my God all my days.
May the Lord rejoice in his works.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

HYMN # 319   Spirit      Manley

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN – Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri          Hymn # 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

MINUTE FOR MISSION      Pentecost Offering
Bobbie Martin

The Reverend Marc Sherrod

*A LITANY FOR PENTECOST
Holy Spirit, Creator, in the beginning you moved over the waters. From your breath all creation drew life. Without you, life turns to dust.
           Come, Holy Spirit!
Holy Spirit, Counselor, by your inspiration, the prophets spoke and acted in faith. You clothed them in power to be bearers of your Word.
           Come, Holy Spirit!
Holy Spirit, Power, you came as fire to Jesus' disciples; you gave them voice before the rulers of this world.
           Come, Holy Spirit!
Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, you created us children of God; you make us the living temple of your presence; you intercede within us with sighs too deep for words.
           Come, Holy Spirit!
Holy Spirit, Giver of life, you guide and make holy the church you create; you give gifts— the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, that the whole creation may become what you want it to be.
           Come, Holy Spirit!
True and only Light, from whom comes every good gift: Send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind. Open the horizons of our minds by the flame of your wisdom. Loosen our tongues to show your praise, for only in your Spirit can we voice your words of peace and acclaim Jesus as Lord. Amen.

Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Will you continue to devote yourself to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers?
           I will, with God’s help.
Will you persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
           I will with God’s help.
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?
           I will with God’s help.
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being?
           I will, with God’s help.

June 8, 2003

Rachel Leigh Dailey

“I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Who shall I send?”

I want to be confirmed because I have lived here most all of my life and I feel safe here. I have dedicated my life to God. I bring friends to church and I always come myself unless I am out-of-town, sick, or visiting another church with a friend. I have always felt like I belonged to Bethel, even though I was baptized at the Eusebia Presbyterian Church. I devote my Sundays to choir singing and coming to Sunday School, and I am ready to make this adult decision and become a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church.

I believe that God is my Holy Father and that he sent Jesus to save us from our sins. We should recognize that we are the sinners, that Jesus is the Savior, and that we cannot save ourselves. We have all sinned and have troubles, and God’s grace gives us a chance to have a new start. God is the one and only God.

I believe that Jesus should be a role model for many people to preach the good news. He came to help people understand the Bible and tell the good things, not bad, about God’s love and forgiveness for all people.

I believe that the Church, the congregation, is my family who always has and always will be there for me. The Church is like a home for us, a place to come together, not a place for people to say “you’re not welcome” but a place where you are greeted.

I believe that prayer is a conversation with God, asking for help. It’s like talking with a friend, or saying words of confession or words of praise or words of rejoicing.

* I am thirteen-years old and I have eleven animals (four dogs, four cats, two horses, one rabbit) and over thirty cows. I play soccer as my main sport. I swim in the summer with a team. I play flute in the band as well as the piano at home. I like to ride my horses on the weekends. I have a brother, two sisters, and my Mom and Dad.

Matthew Hines

I want to become a member of the Church so that I can worship God, learn more about Jesus, what he did, and the kinds of people he cared for.

I believe that God put life on earth, and he sent Jesus to forgive our sins, to spread good will throughout the world, to heal the sick and to die to free us from our sins. Sin is when we do something wrong like hurting others or just about anything that injures someone else. Our sins hurt God, and we should always try to learn how to forgive ourselves as well as others.

I believe the Bible tell us what God and Jesus did. The stories in the Bible tell us in the Old Testament about God’s relationship with the people of Israel and in the New Testament stories about Jesus, the disciples, and the early church.

I believe that the worship of God is important, to ask for God’s forgiveness and to be with other people who also like to come together for worship. I feel relaxed in church and like to be with other people.

* I am fourteen-years old and like to play with my dog, Wishbone. I am looking forward to being a freshman in high school next year. I am in the band, playing the trombone, and I also like to play soccer.

Jeremiah Jacks

I want to be baptized because I believe I want to be a non-sinner again and be a part of the Church. I want to be immersed because all my family members have been baptized that way. I like the idea of the waters just pushing the sins right off my body and the washing my hair as it flows over me.

I believe that God has created me and the way he has created me is the way I am. I should do more for him than he needs to do for me. God has done wonderful things for everyone and he should be respected more often.

I believe that Jesus came to forgive sinners and to teach us about God, and that he suffered and died for our sins.

I believe that the Bible is something we should read more often so that we can remember how God loves the whole world.

*I am 12 years old and I am home-schooled by my mother, Amber. I enjoy helping others at the Humane Society Animal Shelter in Rockwood. I enjoy playing with my animals.I enjoy art.

Max LaDue

I believe that God created the earth and all of the beings on it.

I believe that Jesus was sent to die for our sins and save us for all eternity.

I believe that the Bible and the church are both tools used to raise our understanding of our religion. I think I am ready to be confirmed because when I was baptized promises were made on my behalf, and now I think I am ready to take on those responsibilities. Although these feelings will always be with me, I think they can and will change under certain circumstances.

*I am almost 14 years old, and just graduated Middle School. I play saxophone, and some clarinet, and I am currently taking music lessons from Caleb Sherrod. I am also a Boy Scout, and I am two ranks away from Eagle Scout. I love music and taking a break whenever possible.

Frederick Morgan

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

I believe that God is there to protect us at all times no matter what. When people make mistakes, God is still there to help them through the difficult times. God is patient because he is willing to help you get through those bad times no matter how long it takes.

I believe that Jesus is also a protector and Savior alongside of God. For instance, when he was crucified, he offered to take away all of our sins and he shows us how to live a new life. He was brought to earth to teach us what we should do, especially by demonstrating how to love your neighbor as you love yourself.

I believe that the Bible reflects the teachings of Jesus to us. Stories about what Jesus did are in the Bible and they teach us about him even though he is not physically present on earth anymore. What he did and said can make a difference for us today.

In the Boy Scout Oath, there is the phrase, “to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” I think that this could be paraphrased in the church because it tells us to keep our body, mind, and soul in good condition because we are a kind of temple where the Holy Spirit lives. Also in this way, it could be said that we should treat our bodies as we treat the church, that is with love and respect.

I want to join the Church because I can help take care of the Church and help out by serving other people through missions and other service activities.

* I am 13 years old and attend the Robertsville Middle School in Oak Ridge. I enjoy Boy Scouts, playing the cello in my school orchestra, fishing with my Dad, and doing art projects.

Jordan Beth Sherrod

Ever since I was baptized, something inside of me knew that one day I would join the Church. I feel that I am ready to become a member because I am ready to make my own profession of faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

I believe that God is everywhere, like in the movie, Angels in the Outfield, “He’s always watching.” God is also known as the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. I believe that God made me and everything else, and that God gives us the Bible to teach us how we ought to live.

I believe that Jesus gave his life for us on the cross. He lived his life in a perfect way, hanging out with the disciples as well as everyone whether they were rich or poor who needed help. He told us about God’s forgiveness and love. Jesus gave us a good model for how we should love our neighbors.

I believe that the Holy Spirit is God’s presence inside of my life.

I believe that the Bible uses different characters and stories to show us how God wants us to live. It gives us the history of God’s people and describes the life of the early church. I like Psalm 23 because it makes me feel peaceful when I read it.

* I am almost fourteen years old and I like to be with my friends. I enjoy playing soccer, and my favorite class at Cherokee Middle School, where I just graduated, was gym. I am looking forward to traveling to Switzerland with my Aunt and Uncle this summer.
