TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Holy Trinity
June 11, 2006
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The love of God has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Ascribe to God glory and strength. Ascribe to God the glory of God’s name.

We gather to worship God: In response to God’s power we cry “Glory!”

May the Lord give strength to the people.

May the Lord bless the people with peace!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #138   Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!   Nicaea

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Most Holy God, we cannot withstand the fullness of your glory. Our lives are faulty and frail. We do not live in holiness, but in sin. When we try to live rightly, we often fail. More often we do not try at all. How will our lives ever please you? How can we ever be free? But you are a God full of mercy. Cleanse us, forgive us, free us by your grace. Sanctify us by your Holy Spirit, that we may grow in holiness in the service of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! God has forgiven each one of us and calls us to take parts in the drama of redeeming love. Praise God, who accepts and uses our very human lives in the unfolding story of salvation and new life.

Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON    Isaiah 6:1-8

MOMENT WITH THE CHILDREN   Kathy Banker

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON John 3:1-17

SERMON   Faith & Fiction   Rev. Marc Sherrod, ThD

*HYMN #324   Open My Eyes That I May See   Open My Eyes

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!"
