To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Second Sunday after Pentecost
June 22, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
       Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
           Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE   Baptized in Water      Gaelic

CALL TO WORSHIP    Psalm 104:24-35
       In quietness and darkness, in peace and confusion, Jesus Christ wants to make his home and meet his friends. He is the Light of Life:
           He is the hope for the world.
       In him there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither Protestant or Catholic –
           All are one in Jesus Christ.
       He is the Light of Life:
           He is the hope for the world.
       In him there is neither male nor female, neither master nor servant –
           All are one in Jesus Christ.
       He is the Light of Life:
           He is the hope for the world.
       In him there is neither rich nor poor, neither working class nor middle class –
           All are one in Jesus Christ.
       He is the Light of Life:
           He is the hope for the world.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

HYMN # 150   Come, Christians, Join to Sing      Madrid

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN –

       Before you, Jesus Christ we admit how and where we have underestimated our influence, letting our words or silences hurt, abusing trust, betraying confidences. Lord, hear us;
           Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me; Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.
           Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.
       We admit how and where we have made a show of our religion, attracting more attention to us, and less to you. Lord, hear us;
           Spirit of the living God . . .
       We admit to where in our lives, a vague interest has become a dangerous passion, and we are not sure what to do or whether we are still in control. Lord, hear us;
           Spirit of the living God . . .
       Lord Jesus Christ, if we have looked or longed for an easier gospel, a lighter cross, a less demanding savior, then turn our eyes and avert our longing from what we want to choose to the one who has chosen us. Forgive our unfaithfulness, and , for our better living, give us not the remedy we desire tomorrow, but the grace you offer today. We ask this for your love’s sake.
           Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON – God is giving birth to miracles in our lives, if only we would be open to them. Listen. God stands at the door and knocks, if we hear God's voice and open the door, God will come in and live with us offering us love and forgiveness and life. Let us believe the Good News of the Gospel-
          In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri          Hymn # 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

SCRIPTURE  II Kings 19:1-13, Revelation 8:1

SERMON  The Sounds of Silence
The Reverend Marc Sherrod

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

       That we worship one God, creator, Christ and Holy Spirit, in whose image we are made, to whose service we are summoned, by whose energy we are renewed:
           This we believe.
       That it is central to the mission of Christ to respect the earth as God’s possession, to rejoice in the diversity of human culture, to preserve human life in all its beauty and frailty, to witness to the love of God for all people and all places and to invite others to share that converting experience:
           This we believe.
       That through the power of the Holy Spirit the persecuted shall be lifted up and the wicked shall stumble, the hesitant prayers and hidden actions of God’s people shall change the course of human history, the ancient words of scripture shall startle us with fresh insights:
           This we believe.
       That God has called the church into being to be the servant of the kingdom, to be a sign of God’s new order, to offer a foretaste on earth of the magnificence of heaven:
           This we believe.
       That Christ, fully aware of our differences, prays that we may be one so that the world might believe:
           This we believe and to this we are committed for the love of God in the way of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
