To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

       Sing, and give praise to God’s name;
           tell the glad news of salvation from day to day.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

HYMN # 483  Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above   Mit Freuden Zart

*A TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN –

       Merciful God, in your gracious presence we confess our sin and the sin of this world. Although Christ is among us as our peace, we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the values of a broken world. The profit and pleasures we pursue lay waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies that we harbor set neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation. We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom, of intellect and reason, and have turned them into bonds of oppression. Lord, have mercy upon us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON – God is giving birth to miracles in our lives, if only we would be open to them. Listen. God stands at the door and knocks, if we hear God's voice and open the door, God will come in and live with us offering us love and forgiveness and life. Let us believe the Good News of the Gospel-
          In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri          Hymn # 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING    Psalm 130

A MOMENT WITH THE CHILDREN OF THE CHURCH

NEW TESTAMENT READING    Mark 5:21-43

SERMON  The Problem with Miracles
The Reverend Marc Sherrod

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – from “The Confession of 1967"

       We acknowledge that God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of human minds. We ascribe to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But in Jesus Christ God reveals love by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful people. The power of God’s love in Christ transforms the world and discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of his love.
