TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
July 18, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

The whole earth is full of God’s glory.

PRELUDE   Nun Bitten Wir Den Heilgen Geist   Buxtehude

CALL TO WORSHIP

Let love be genuine....love one another with mutual affection.

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers

This is the will of God for us, the nature of God’s love toward all.

When we were strangers God welcomed us, fed us with food from heaven, and clothed us with the forgiving love of Christ.

We recall God’s graciousness toward us, and come together to worship the God of goodness and hospitality.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 457   Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art   Toulon

*UNISON PRAYER OFCONFESSION

Scripture admonishes us to “be hospitable to one another without complaining.” We confess that we often complain inwardly if not outwardly. You know our hearts, know that our hospitality is not always sincere and from true, loving motives. We are tentative about letting others inside our lives, even those we know. And though we may open our church doors, we tend to guard our hearts. Some of us are fearful of those unlike us who may come in. Some of us are nervous and more centered upon ourselves than the guest we are to welcome, the stranger who comes in the guise of our Lord. Forgive us, we pray, in the name of the Holy One. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

When we risk coming to God with humble, contrite hearts, making a true confession, God welcomes us with open arms and assures us of forgiveness. God’s hospitality toward us in Christ Jesus sets us free from the past and invites us into a new life of love and service toward others in Christ’s name. Praise be to God!

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn # 539

OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE   Psalm 52

A TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE   Luke 10:38-42

SERMON   Divided Attention
Rev. Marc Sherrod, ThD

*HYMN # 357   O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee   Maryton

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED (Ecumenical)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY   Invocation to the Holy Spirit   Wolz

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Lord, you call us to expand our horizons, seeking new ways of being in ministry within our community and in the world. Forgive us when we, out of fear or prejudice, turn our faces away from hurting neighbors. May we heed Jesus’ teaching to go to our neighbors and offer ourselves and our resources for their care and healing. Let us love one another as you have loved us, in Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

*HYMN # 367   Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love   Chereponi

*CHARGE AND BLESSING   God Be With You   Hymn # 540

God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you,
With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again. Amen.
