To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
July 20, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Worship the Lord with gladness,
and enter the Lord’s presence with songs of joy.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

In caring and compassion, God’s arms embrace us when we feel weak and alone.
Let us open our arms to share that embrace with others.
With ideas and inspiration, God pushes us to grow and thrive.
Let us give that seed new roots by planting it in the soil of others’ lives.
With divine generosity, God shares all creation with us.
Let us share that bounty with all for whom God created.
God calls us as partners to build a world of joy and hope.
Let us build a world where our lives, and those of our sisters and brothers,
may resound in praise of our gracious God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 265  Great God, We Sing That Might Hand    Wareham

*A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Merciful God, in Jesus you have shown us the way of salvation, the joy of Christian fellowship, and the model of service to others. Yet we turn our backs on your gifts; we dishonor you in the way we treat our bodies; we bring harm to others through the choices we make; we cling to destructive habits and superficial values; we allow the opinions of others to control the way we think about ourselves. Forgive us, we pray. Remind us of your covenant love and fill us with the grace of new beginnings. Help us to rise to new life, so that we might live together in honesty, peace, and unity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!    Hymn # 341

Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.   (repeat)

NEW TESTAMENT READING   Mark 6: 14-29

A MOMENT WITH THE CHILDREN OF THE CHURCH

OLD TESTAMENT READING    2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12-19

SERMON Cover Me - I’m Changing Lanes!
The Reverend Marc Sherrod

*HYMN # 367    Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us With Your Love    Chereponi

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Philippians 2:5-11

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.

PRAYER CONCERNS AND A TIME FOR SHARING

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN # 438  Blest Be the Tie That Binds  Dennis

*CHARGE AND BLESSING  God Be With You   Hymn # 540

God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you,
With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again. Amen.
