To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
August 3, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE  Do This in Remembrance     Clarke

CALL TO WORSHIP

The Lord be with you And also with you.
In Christ God calls us to be servants, to witness God’s realm and rule.
Let us worship the God whose servants we are:
And give glory to the name of the one in whose service we live.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 244  Let Us with a Gladsome Mind     Monkland

*A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Forgive us, Lord, when our witness is timid and heartless. Forgive visions of your kingdom clouded by human folly; songs to your glory sung in dissonance; half-hearted attempts at service prodded by guilt. Restore in us the wonder of your love, and a longing for your presence with us. Teach our tongues to sing the melody of your grace; help us run the race set before us looking to Christ who loves us, who shows us who you are and calls us to be servants, in whose name we pray. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ,
We are forgiven. Amen.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord most high. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

All praise to you, God our Creator, for by your Word and Spirit you made the heavens and the earth, filled them with life, and declared everything good. All praise to you, God our Redeemer, for sending prophets, apostles, teachers, and martyrs, inspired by your Spirit to speak the word of life, and, when the time was right, for becoming fully human in Jesus Christ. All praise to you, God our Helper; as wisdom, you inspire us to speak the truth; as power, you strengthen us to do justice. With your sons and daughters of faith, in all times and places, and with all the heavenly hosts, we praise you with joy.

Holy, holy, holy God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God. Hosanna in the highest!

Loving God, in gratitude we remember that on the night before the crucifixion, Jesus took bread and after giving thanks to you broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying: “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way after supper Jesus took the cup and after giving you thanks, gave it to them and said: “This cup is the covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” In gratitude for what Christ has done for us, we proclaim our hope.

Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life, Jesus, come in glory.

Holy God, send your Holy Spirit upon us and these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one people, a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ. Through this meal unite us with the risen Christ so that we may give ourselves for the life of the world. Through us bring good news to the poor, release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed. Give us the power to work for justice that all the world may be filled with peace and joy. This sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving we offer you, eternal God, through Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Our Father . . .

BREAKING THE BREAD

The bread we break is the communion of the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body for we all share in the one bread.
The cup of blessing for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
We who are many are one body for we all share in the one cup.
