TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Ninth Sunday after Pentecost
August 6, 2006
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The love of God has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

O Lord, open my lips,

And my mouth will declare your praise.

The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;

A humble and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #145   Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart!   Marion

*CALL TO CONFESSION

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Mighty and merciful God, hear our prayers and be gracious to us. For the lives we live are not worthy of our calling. Too often we heed other voices and obey other powers than your own. We have wavered in our faith and wandered from your path. We forget who we are because we forget who you are. By your grace, O God, forgive us. Restore us to the fullness of life in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Make us your grateful servants whose greatest joy is to praise you, we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

SCRIPTURE READING   John 6:24-35

SERMON   Truthfully Speaking   Rev. Marc Sherrod, ThD

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION   Hymn #592

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostle’s Creed (Traditional) Hymnal Page #14

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN #520   Here, O Our Lord, We See You Face to Face

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Let us pray.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

*HYMN #341 Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!   Assurance

*CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Spirit of the Living God   Hymn #322

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

WEEK ENDING SAT 15TH 2006:

Grace children continued with studies under chilly climate. We have relaxed the uniform requirement so that they can put on whatever they find to stay warm. The term is coming to an end on 2nd August and teachers are busy teaching and reviewing with the children.

We do have a tricky issue to work through on how to replace teachers proceeding on maternity leave. Three of our teachers are expectant. Eunice our class one teacher will be proceeding for maternity leave from September. That means that she will not return for the third term. Others are Miriam and Easter. They will proceed for leave in January 2007. Mr. James Mbatia will be proceeding for Seminary from 26th August. We are having a fund raising for him tomorrow at Community Presbyterian Church to see if he can raise the $ 3000 tuition. This is a very high figure by our standard, but we shall see what the Lord will do. We pray for God’s wisdom as we plan for the way forward.

I (Samuel) had a surgical removal of the swelling at my back on Tuesday. It was successful and it was not malignant. Thank you for friends who took all the trouble to call from US to encourage and pray for me. I went back again today, Saturday, for dressing, and the Doctor was happy with the way it is healing. I am visiting one of the sites on behalf of SDOP this afternoon and I will do another one next week from Monday through Thursday.

The church is doing fine, and we have been going through the 1st chapters of the Book of Acts. The purpose is to teach the believers our roots and our calling to witness of the Christ's resurrection. The place of wonders and signs has been seriously misplaced in the African Church resulting in churches where people go for nothing short of miracles. Our prayer is that we shall be a Church founded on authentic scriptural teaching as interpreted through reformed tradition.

Our office computer crashed and we are in prayer for a better one. The one we had was frustratingly slow. Be in prayer with us.

God be with you this week and always.

Samuel
