TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 8, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

The whole earth is full of God’s glory.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP   Psalm 150

Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary;

Praise God in his mighty heavens. Praise God for his acts of power;

Praise God for his surpassing greatness.

Praise God with the sounding of the trumpet,

Praise God with the harp and lyre,

Praise God with tambourine and dancing,

Praise God with the strings and flute,

Praise God with the clash of cymbals,

Praise God with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD .

Praise the LORD.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 485  To God Be the Glory To God Be the Glory

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH All Praise to God for Song God Gives    Hymnal # 328

God gave us music, gave us voice: Sing alleluia and rejoice!

We lift in faith secure and strong the sacred word through sacred song.

All praise to God for song God gives, For music and a hope that lives;

God’s sacred word is so profound, We sing and let the truth resound.

The word gives both the life and light, And guides us through the shades of night,

So let the music sound God’s praise As hymns bring gladness to our days.

In song let God be glorified. For God is able to provide

The music for the singers’ art As song God places in the heart.

All praise to God, whose sacred word Has brought good news to all who heard.

We worship God and sing with joy, And instruments of praise employ.

God gave us music, gave us voice: Sing alleluia and rejoice!

We lift in faith secure and strong the sacred word through sacred song.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
