TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
August 15, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

The whole earth is full of God’s glory.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP   Psalm 80

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, stir up your might and come to save us!

Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name.

Restore us, O Lord of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Let us worship God!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 356  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing   Nettleton

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

*LITANY OF CONFESSION

If then you have been raised with Christ, set your mind on things that are above.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

But now you must get rid of all such things–anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*HYMN # 409   Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice   Aberystwyth

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from “A Brief Statement of Faith”

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN # 293   This Is My Father’s World    Terra Beata

*CHARGE AND BENEDICTION AND RESPONSE   God Be With You   Hymn # 540

God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you,

With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again. Amen.

*POSTLUDE

*All who are able may stand.

If we see that we are filling a need among Bethel members, we will explore expanding to others. Thanks.

CALL TO WORSHIP

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling,
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all,
who is above all and through all and in all.
As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek,
there is no longer slave or free,
there is no longer male and female;
for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
The promise is for you, for your children and for all who are far away,
everyone whom the Lord our God calls.

HYMN   Baptized in Water    To the tune “Morning Has Broken”

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King;
Heirs of salvation, Trusting the promise, Faithfully now God’s praises we sing.

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Dead in the tomb with Christ, our King;
One with His rising, Freed and forgiven, Thankfully now God’s praises we sing.

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Marked with the sign of Christ, our King;
Born of the Spirit, We are God’s children, Joyfully now God’s praises we sing.

SCRIPTURE AND MEDITATION

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM for Jared Scott McGill, Thomas Sherman McGill,
and John Michael Walker

INTRODUCTION

PRESENTATION OF THE BAPTISMAL CANDIDATES

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

PROFESSION OF FAITH (Those making the promises on behalf of these children)

Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?

I renounce them.

Do you renounce the evil powers of this world, which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God?

I renounce them.
Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God?

I renounce them.

Who is your Lord and Savior?

Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.

Will you be Christ's faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?

I will, with God's help.

With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

APOSTLES’ CREED (The Congregation)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE BAPTISM

HYMN Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures;
He
will my shield and portion be As long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.

LAYING ON OF HANDS

WELCOME

With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ's one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We are the people of God, members of the household of faith, a royal priesthood.

Proclaim with us the good news of Christ for all the world.

We are one in Christ Jesus: share with us at the table of God's kingdom.

HYMN Peace Prayer based on a prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me a means of Your peace. Where there’s hatred grown, let me sow Your love.

Where there’s injury, Lord, let forgiveness be my sword. Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, make me a means of Your peace. Where there’s doubt and fear, let me sow Your faith.

In this world’s despair, give me hope in You to share. Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, make me a means of Your peace. When there’s sadness here, let me sow Your joy.

When the darkness nears, may Your light dispel our fears.

Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, grant me to seek and to share: less to be consoled than to help console,

less be understood than to understand Your good. Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, grant me to seek and to share: to receive love less than to give love free,
just to give in to Thee, just receiving from your tree. Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord grant me to seek and to share: to forgive in Thee, You’ve forgiven me;
for to die in Thee is eternal life to me. Lord, make me a means of Your peace.
