To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 17, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Worship the Lord with gladness,.
and enter the Lord’s presence with songs of joy.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Let us worship God! Happy are those whose help and hope is in God.
It is God who makes heaven and earth and all that is in it.
It is God who keeps faith forever, executes justice for the oppressed, and gives food to the hungry.
It is God who frees the prisoner, opens the eyes of the blind, and lifts up those who are bowed down.
It is God who watches over strangers and upholds the widow and the orphans.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 464  Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee     Hymn to Joy

*A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Great God: your Son called disciples, and prayed for their unity. Forgive divisions. Help us to confess our lack of charity toward people whose customs are different or whose creeds conflict with what we believe. Forgive arrogance that claims God’s truth; that will not listen or learn new ways. Heal broken fellowship in your mercy, and draw the church together in one faith, loyal to one Lord and Savior. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

People, hear the Good News! God sent Jesus Christ into the world so that the whole world would be encouraged to live in harmony and to give glory to God in one voice.
The gift of repentance has been given to each of us.
Therefore, go in peace with the assurance that our prayers have been heard and our sins are forgiven.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH SELECTED VERSES FROM PROVERBS 10

A wise child makes a glad father, but a foolish child is a mother’s grief.
A child who gathers in summer is prudent, but a child who sleeps in harvest brings shame.
The wise of heart will heed commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever follows perverse ways will be found out.
Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
The wise lay up knowledge, but the babbling of a fool brings ruin near.
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but the prudent are restrained in speech.
The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense.
The hope of the righteous ends in gladness, but the expectation of the wicked comes to nothing.
