TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart.

God has sent redemption to the people; God has commanded the covenant forever.

Holy and awesome is God’s name!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #487   When Morning Gilds the Skies   Laudes Domini

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Sovereign God, we cannot hide from you the sinfulness of our hearts. You know our every thought and deed. You see the evil that we do, and the good that we leave undone. You see our selfishness and pride, our petty scheming and our grand designs. Pursuing our own desires, we distort your truth. We trust our own knowledge and cleverness more than your life-giving Word in Jesus Christ. Look upon us with mercy, O God. Forgive our sin and purify our lives. Live and rule in us, by your Spirit, that each thought, work, and deed may serve your will, through Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION   Hymn #592

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostle’s Creed (Traditional)   Hymnal Page #14

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN #513   Let Us Break Bread Together   Let Us Break Bread

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Let us pray.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Alternative Gift Giving Luncheon & Craft Fair

You’re all invited to a special luncheon and craft sale after church this afternoon. Bethel’s children have spent this summer studying the passage from Matthew 25 which outlines the types of ministries that Christians are to be involved in. As they studied about hunger, lack of shelter and medicine, and the need to be welcoming, visiting the sick and imprisoned, they learned about charities that are involved in helping to fill these needs. The children have spent the summer making simple handicrafts which will be for sale. It is our hope that you will select items for gift-giving and make a donation to the charity represented by each gift. The gifts will be accompanied by cards which explain that each gift represents a donation which has been made in their honor to that charity.

Office Closed

The office will be closed tomorrow, September 4 in observance of Labor Day.

Attention Singers! Choir rehearsals will begin this Wednesday evening, September 6th at 7:15 p.m. If you would like to share your singing talents, this is the opportunity for you. All are welcome and encouraged to join!

Rebuilding in the Gulf Coast

One year later the survivors of Hurricane Katrina continue to rebuild their lives and refine their understanding of hope and community. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has posted to the PDA website (www.pcusa.org/pda) a 3-minute video of rebuilding in the Gulf Coast.  Also included on the website are short interview vignettes *Voices from the Gulf* that lift up the words of the volunteers, survivors, and Volunteer Village staff, who are part of the collective effort for long-term recovery and rehabilitation of the Gulf Coast.  A DVD copy containing all of the videos can be requested from PDA by sending an email to pda@pcusa.org or by calling Jenny at 888-728-7228 ext 5805 or Pamela at 888-728-7228 ext 5839.  A Note from Deb: I have not heard from anyone except Denise Martin and Dave Nippert of a willingness to return to the Gulf area.  Remember, October 8th is getting closer every day.  Please contact Deb Hyder at 376-6340 or dhyd8@aol.com if you are willing to go back with us. In God's service, Deb Hyder

A Week Of Grace
Below is an excerpt from the journal of Grace School in Kenya, which is on-line at www.graceministries-limuru.org/journal.html. Bethel provides financial and other assistance to the school, and a week’s portion of the journal is usually in our bulletin on the 1st Sunday of the month.

Bethel folks should know that since the writing of this entry, financial provisions for a new computer system have been made available through the generosity of the memorial fund of Ella Winsboro.

Contact Joe Coen or the Mission Outreach Committee for more information about Grace School.

Dear our esteemed readers of Grace Journal,

Grace School is out on brake until 4th September. There are few activities at School during this period. There will be a few children who are academically weak who will continue to come for remedial teaching.

Grace journal will temporarily stop for a period of three weeks. Please be in prayer with us during this period for:

1. Provision for computer/s for Grace School

2. Funds to roof the three classes. We have no classes for Jan 2007.

3. Funds for teachers support. As some teachers proceeds for maternity leave, we have engaged others to ensure continuity of learning.

I (Samuel) will use the break for Pastoral visitation especially to family members of our children and Church members living with HIV/AIDS. There is also construction of the Church Sanctuary. It is a shame that this particular church has remained at the foundation without a slub for 9 years. I will be encouraging the few financially able members to give the building of Lords house a priority.

I will be sharing more in the Grace Newsletter which will be available later in the month.

The Lord be with you and bless you.

Samuel.
