TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 4, 2005

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Worship the Lord with gladness.

And enter the Lord’s presence with songs of joy.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Awake! Today is the day God has made.

Sing to God a new song and praise God’s holy name.

We come with our songs of praise to our faithful God.

Where two or three are gathered in God’s name, God is here among us.

Praise be to God!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #473   For the Beauty of the Earth   Dix

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

God of hope and peace, God of strength and gentleness, remind us again of the holy way for God’s people to travel. Forgive us for failing to see your joy and majesty. Forgive us for being weak in serving you. Forgive us for failing to see the glory of your creation where waters can break forth in the wilderness and the deserts shall bring forth beauty. Open our eyes to see your promises. Open our ears to hear the good news of your love for all your children. Quench our thirst with showers of your love for us. Through Christ we pray. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The good news is that God forgives us and gives us Christ to be living water and true bread. Let us accept with joy these precious gifts and abundant life.

Thanks be to God! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*APOSTLES CREED

Do you believe in God, the Father almighty?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricanes in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast flattened buildings. They flooded streets and snapped utility poles like matchsticks. But, there is a force that is even stronger than the devastating effects of wind and weather: God’s boundless love. Join Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) in making that love felt to the thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. PDA has committed an immediate $500,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing and undesignated funds to respond to the needs of disaster survivors and to support the deployment of members of the PDA Team to help presbyteries, congregations and communities organize their response. PDA has issued an appeal for $10 million to help in this response and is committed to working in a coordinated effort with other Christians to extend our response as far as possible. To help with the ongoing relief efforts, please write your checks to Bethel and earmark them Hurricane Katrina.
