To Our Guests, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time
September 7, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE       Let Us Break Bread Together       Broughton

CALL TO WORSHIP

Come, let us sing to our Creator;
Make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
We come into God’s presence with thanksgiving;
Let us make a joyful noise with songs of praise!
Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before God, our Maker!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 461  God Is Here! Abbot’s      Leigh

*A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

O God, Source of all that makes life possible, we come before you with all the broken pieces of our lives. We surrender our sins, ways we have strayed from your path, things we have done that have hurt others, and works of love we have left undone. We offer the fragments of hurt and pain that lay shattered in our hopelessness. We lift up to you all of our sadness, our bitterness, our struggles, our exhaustion. Come, Lord Jesus, come. Mend our bodies and souls and make us whole once again by the power of your Spirit. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God promises us that in the midst of our brokeness and our failures, there are signs of wholeness, hope, and resurrection. God works in ways to change despair and depression into awareness, breaking down the walls that divide, healing wounds of the spirit, and creating the power to live joyfully in new ways.
In Christ, we are given new life.
God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

*RESPONSE      Amazing Grace      Hymn # 280

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

COMMISSIONING OF THE CHURCH SCHOOL TEACHERS

SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE – Galatians 3:27-28

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek,
there is no longer slave or free,
there is no longer male or female;
for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP

We are called by God to be the church of Jesus Christ, a sign in the world today of what God intends for all humankind.

The great ends of the church are the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. (from Book of Order of PCUSA “Form of Government”)

The call of Christ is to willing, dedicated discipleship. Our discipleship is a manifestation of the new life we enter through baptism.
Discipleship is both a gift and a commitment, an offering and a responsibility.
The grace bestowed on you in baptism is sufficient for your calling because it is God’s grace. By God’s grace we are saved, and enabled to grow in faith and to commit our lives in ways that serve Christ. God has called you to particular service. Show your purpose by answering these questions.

Who is your Lord and Savior?
Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.

Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?
I will, with God’s help.

Do you welcome the responsibility of this service because you are determined to follow the Lord Jesus, to love neighbors, and to work for the reconciling of the world?
I do.

Will you serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love, relying on God’s mercy and rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you, the congregation, pray for, participate in and support the Christian Education Ministry of this Church?
We will.

COMMISSIONING PRAYER

Faithful God, in baptism you claimed us; and by your Holy Spirit you are working in our loves, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling. We thank you for leading them to this time and place. Establish them in your truth, and guide them by your Holy Spirit, that in your service they may grow in faith, hope, and love, and be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory now and forever.
Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you are called disciples and by the Holy Spirit, made the one church to serve you. Let you Spirit rule your church, so that we may be joined in love and service to Jesus Christ, who, having gone before us, is coming to meet us in the promise of your kingdom. Amen.

CHARGE – Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

BLESSING – I Thessalonians 5:23

May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY    Christ, We Do All Adore Thee    Dubois

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghosts. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN #521    You Satisfy the Hungry Heart    Finest Wheat (vs. 1-3)

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord most high. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Holy God, Creator of heaven and earth, we give you thanks and praise. By the power of your risen Son Jesus, who was condemned, forsaken, and hug on a cross, we are forgiven. How grateful we are that he died and rose again to show your love for us! How thankful we are that you have not abandoned or cursed us, but instead offer us life in paradise with him. Therefore with choirs of angels, and the whole company of heaven , we worship and adore your glorious name, joining our voices in their unending praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God. Hosanna in the highest!
We praise you, O Christ, for entering the world to live among us, full of grace and truth. Born of Mary, you share our life. Eating with sinners, you welcome us. Guiding your children, you lead us. Visiting the sick, you heal us. Dying on the cross, you save us. Risen from the dead, you give us new life. Receive our joyful praise:
Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Jesus, come in glory.
Loving God, pour out your Holy Spirit on us and these gifts of bread and juice, that they may become for us the Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ. By your Spirit unite us with the living Christ and with all who are baptized in his name, that we may be one in ministry in every place. And now, as our Savior taught us, we humbly pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hollowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

BREAKING THE BREAD AND POURING THE CUP

The bread we break is the communion of the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body for we all share in the one bread.
The cup of blessing for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
We who are many are one body for we all share in the one cup.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE He Will Carry You; His Strength Is Perfect

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

*HYMN # 521    You Satisfy the Hungry Heart    (vs. 4-5)

*CHARGE AND BLESSING  God Be With You   Hymn # 540

God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you,
With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again. Amen.
