TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

This is the day the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

PRELUDE   Glorify Thy Name   Handbell Choir

CALL TO WORSHIP

If it had not been the Lord on our side,
- let God’s people say together -

If it had not been the Lord on our side when our enemies attacked us,

the flood would have swept us away,

the torrent would have gone over us.

Blessed be the Lord. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #476   O Worship the King, All Glorious Above!   Lyons

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from the dead and offered us eternal life through Christ. We confess that we fail to trust your good news, or to live in the freedom of your love. We bow to forces that do not rule. We look at our world with despair, not hope. We live with our sin as if it is the final word about us, instead of a power defeated by your love. Cleanse us from sin, Holy God. Open our eyes to the truth of the resurrection. Thrill us with the power of your Spirit. Free us to live abundantly and eternally through Jesus Christ, our risen Savior. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.

FIRST LESSON   Psalm 121

ANTHEM   Living Bread   Chancel Choir

SECOND LESSON   James 5:13-20

SERMON   Yes, Lord   Rev. Bill Shenk

DEDICATION OF ALTERNATIVE GIFTS

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

*DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION   Hymn #592

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We declare that Jesus is Lord.

His resurrection is a decisive victory over the powers that deform and destroy human life.

His lordship is hidden.

The world appears to be dominated by people and systems that do not acknowledge his rule.

But his lordship is real.

It demands our loyalty and sets us free from the fear of all lesser lords who threaten us.

We maintain that ultimate sovereignty now belongs to Jesus Christ in every sphere of life.

Jesus is Lord! He has been Lord from the beginning. He will be Lord at the end. Even now he is Lord. Amen.

*HYMN #282   If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

GREAT THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Let us pray.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

*HYMN #170   The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want   Crimond

*CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Let There Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me,
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father, brothers all are we,
Let me walk with my brother, in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now,
With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow,
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me!

*POSTLUDE

*All who are able may stand.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Peacemaking Sunday

Today is Peacemaking Sunday. Prayerfully consider how your portion of the Peacemaking Offering can be used to make a difference in the world. Please give generously.

Blankets for the Gulf

The Parish Nurse and the Mission Outreach Committee are asking for parishioners to donate twin and/or full size blankets for the Gulf area.  These folks are facing their second winter with many of their common needs not being met.  If you would like to donate, please leave your new or gently used blankets in the Parish Nurse office.  Debbie will be taking the blankets down with our team when they go to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi on October 14th.  Debbie and the Mission Outreach Committee thank you in advance for your kindness.

Fall Church Hike

If you missed our last church hike to Little Greenbrier School, you have a chance to see an adjacent part of the Smokies joining us on Sunday, October 16 for a hike up the Schoolhouse Gap Trail. We’ll gather at Bethel immediately after worship on that Sunday with sack lunches and carpool to the trailhead, picnicking together somewhere along the way. This is not a strenuous hike. The trail itself should be relatively easy with good footing along its 2.2 mile length up the 600 foot climb. We’ll return back to the cars downhill along the same trail and head back to Kingston together. Be sure to bring plenty of liquid for the trip and join us to see the fall colors! Contact Mark Banker or Joe Coen for more information and/or to let us know you are hiking with us.

The Open Door Newsletter

The Open Door newsletter was sent out on Friday. We would like to say a special thank you to Karen Schall for doing such a great job each month putting it all together and making it look great! Be sure to watch the mail for yours this week. If you do not get one or you would like to be added to our mailing list, please let Alicia in the church office know.

Usher Chart

We are in need of Ushers for Sunday mornings in October. Please take a minute after worship today to sign up on the chart in the back of the Sanctuary.

Sunset Gap

The Mission Outreach Committee is collecting clothes for all seasons, household items, and toys to take to Sunset Gap. Please place all donations in the designated area in the Choir Room.
