PRAYER OF THE DAY
*HYMN #376 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Hyfrydol
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN
When we think too highly of ourselves and forget that we are but dust, forgive us, God of mercy. When we think too lowly of ourselves and forget that you love us beyond our understanding, forgive us, God of mercy. When we treat others without grace; when we overlook those who need care; when we hurt those whom we love; forgive us, God of mercy. When we take your love for granted, or fail to heed your gracious commandments, or act according to our own wills and not yours, forgive us, God of mercy. Amen.
*WORDS OF ASSURANCE
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Hymn #578
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
GREETING FROM THE PRESBYTERY OF EAST TENNESSEE Molly Garnett
FIRST LESSON Psalm 8
ANTHEM
SECOND LESSON I Peter 2
SERMON Some Things We Know Rev. Bill Shenk
*HYMN #261 God of Compassion, in Mercy Befriend Us O Quanta Qualia
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
All things will be renewed in Christ. In Christ God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish. We do not know when the final day will come. In our time we see only broken and scattered signs that the renewal of all things is under way. We do not yet see the end of cruelty and suffering in the world, the church, or our own lives. But we see Jesus as Lord. As he stands at the center of our history, we are confident he will stand at its end. He will judge all people and nations. Evil will be condemned and rooted out of God’s good creation. There will be no more tears or pain. All things will be made new. The fellowship of human beings with God and each other will be perfected. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please welcome Molly Garnet who is the “Interim Associate Executive for the Church Professional” with the Presbytery of East Tennessee. She is joining us today to bring us a message from Presbytery. She is also our liturgist for the day.
The monthly Fun Luncheon, hosted by Tom and Jane Pickel, will be this Tuesday, October 10 in the Fellowship Hall beginning at noon. All are encouraged to attend and bring a dish to share.
The Parish Nurse and the Mission Outreach Committee are asking for parishioners to donate twin and/or full size blankets for the Gulf area. If you would like to donate, please leave your new or gently used blankets in the Parish Nurse office no later than Tuesday, October 10. Debbie will be taking the blankets down with our team when they go to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi on October 14th. Debbie and the Mission Outreach Committee thank you in advance for your kindness.
Join us next Sunday, October 15 for a hike up the Schoolhouse Gap Trail. We’ll gather at Bethel immediately after worship with sack lunches and carpool to the trailhead, picnicking together somewhere along the way. This is not a strenuous hike. The trail itself should be relatively easy with good footing along its 2.2 mile length up the 600 foot climb. We’ll return back to the cars downhill along the same trail and head back to Kingston together. Be sure to bring plenty of liquid for the trip and join us to see the fall colors! Contact Mark Banker or Joe Coen for more information and/or to let us know you are hiking with us.
Please pray for Hands of Mercy as they try to provide for more than 100 Roane County families each week. The ministry is struggling with providing food and with finding more adequate facilities for serving families.
We are in desperate need of Ushers for Sunday mornings. Please take a minute after worship today to sign up on the chart in the back of the Sanctuary. For more information, contact Alicia in the church office.
