TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
October 22, 2006
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

This is the day the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great.

You are clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment.

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #263   Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise St. Denio

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Almighty God, we confess our need to control our lives, as if we cannot trust you to care for us. Though you have named us your beloved children, we try to make our own name for ourselves. Yet we strive for status and power; we crave money, possessions, and attention. We envy instead of celebrating the successes of others. We forget that your grace alone is sufficient for our need. Forgive us, loving God. Give us such security in your care that we need not seek it anywhere else. Free us to be joyful, generous, and loving, choosing not to be served, but to serve, as did the one we follow, Jesus Christ. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

GREETING FROM THE PRESBYTERY OF EAST TENNESSEE   Molly Garnett

FIRST LESSON   Psalm 104:1-9

ANTHEM

SECOND LESSON   Mark 10:35-45

SERMON   After Me, You’re First   Rev. Bill Shenk

*HYMN #298   There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy In Babilone

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – The Nicene Creed   Hymnal Page #15

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us all, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made human, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose Kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

To the Session, Mission Committee and Members of Bethel Presbyterian Church Kingston, Greetings from Teachers, Children, Monica and me - thank you for your continued prayers and support, which have helped Grace School to deliver its service. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow, as we have been kept posted about the sickness of our brother Marc. We have continuously kept him in our thoughts and prayers. You have refreshed our hearts in our hurts and we have a Christian duty to hurt with you as you continue to minister to Marc’s family. The Lord be gracious to you all. –Samuel Wambugu

A Note from Marc . . .

How could I ever begin to count the blessings God has bestowed upon me through your thoughtfulness during my time of surgery and illness? Each day, I have been touched by the beautiful, uplifting cards received; the bounteous servings of food provided by elders and others has been an overwhelming demonstration of generosity; the special gift of the “hymn-caroling” when so many of you came out to the house and comforted me with the old hymns of faith and hope was one of the richest spiritual experiences I have had; I also give thanks for the healing and anointing service folks from Bethel performed prior to the my first surgery, and for the members of the Presbytery of East Tennessee who visited and had a similar service for healing.

It has been a difficult couple of weeks, and your prayers have meant everything in my process of recovery. The surgeon had hoped to remove the tumor, or at least part of it, but was unable to do so because of its proximity to a couple of major arteries. He did remove enough tissue for a biopsy, and the initial word was not particularly hopeful: a squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary origin, which has a high reoccurrence rate. Several days ago, however, my oncologist called and said the tumor might be of thymic origin, which would make it more treatable by chemo and radiation therapy. It is possible the tumor could be shrunk and then surgically removed. We’ll be going to Vanderbilt tomorrow for a second consult and see what the folks there recommend.

My deep gratitude to all, especially the elders and the clergy in our larger Bethel family, who have pulled together to help us through this time of crisis. My love to each of you!!! Pastor Marc
