Sunday Morning Worship Service
October 24, 2004
TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.
THE SERVICE FOR THE LORDS DAY
Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost
October 24, 2004
GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of Gods glory.
PRELUDE
CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 65
Praise is due to you, O God, for you answer our prayer.
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your holy temple.
By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance.
You are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.
Let us worship God!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
*HYMN # 260 A Mighty Fortress is our God Ein Feste Burg
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
To fear you is the beginning of wisdom, O God, and to confess our sins can lead to repentance. We acknowledge the wrongs we commit against neighbors; the remarks that aim at tearing them down, the actions that exclude, the subtle and not so subtle distinctions that put them in their place. Forgive us for our love of comfort in a world that is hungry and thirsty. Help us to amend our ways, through the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ. Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Hear the good news: Christ delivers those who are truly sorry and repent of their sins. Christ intercedes on their behalf before the judgment seat of Almighty God. Christ cleanses them and makes them fit to dwell in Gods heavenly dominion.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Hymn # 579

*HYMN # 392 Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord Hall
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of deatheven death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.
