Sunday Morning Worship Service
November 19, 2006
TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

PRELUDE
CALL TO WORSHIP
My heart exults in the Lord:
my strength is exalted in my God.
There is no Holy One like the Lord;
there is no Rock like our God!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
*HYMN #555 Now Thank We All Our God Nun Danket Alle Gott
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN
Have mercy on us, O God, for the sin in our dealings with others people whom we overlook or ignore, all whom we treat as enemies, those with whom we need reconciliation. Have mercy on us, O God, for treating your Creation casually wasting our resources, squandering our talents, seeking after the frivolous, failing in our stewardship. Have mercy on us, O God, for our shallow faith for lifting our hearts to what is false; for seeing your way as a burden and not a gift. In your mercy, forgive us, O God. Purify our hearts, and rule in our lives, that the world would see in us a witness to your sovereign love and glory. Amen.
*WORDS OF ASSURANCE
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE God of Our Life Hymn #275 vs 1
God of our life, through all the circling years, We trust in Thee;
In all the past, through all our hopes and fears, Thy hand we see.
With each new day, when morning lifts the veil,
We own Thy mercies, Lord, which never fail.

*HYMN #392 Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord Hall
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave, whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our trust. Who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible; one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. By whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice have appointed, and to the manifestation of his own glory. Amen.

Let all things now living
A song of thanksgiving
To God our Creator triumphantly raise;
Who fashioned and made us, Protected and stayed us,
By guiding us on to the end of our days.
God’s banners are o’er us,
Pure light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night:
Till shadow have vanished, All fearfulness banished,
As forward we travel from light into Light.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Congregational Meeting this morning will act upon the report of the nominating committee. They will be nominating four Elders: Carol Brown, Joe Coen, Gary Griffith and Dolores Sandmel, and one Trustee, Stephen Cutshall.
Today is Dedication Sunday. Please prayerfully reflect on your commitment to the church and fill out The Time, Gifts and Resources Survey available in the Narthex. Please bring yours forward during hymn #428.
There will be a Stated Session Meeting this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Joni Morgan is asking for donations of used paperback books to send to our soldiers in Iraq. They have a very poor selection and what they do have are pretty worn out. Science fiction, westerns, thrillers, historical fiction, general novels and non-fiction would all be appreciated. Please drop off your donations in the designated box in the room below the sanctuary no later than Sunday, December 3 so they can get to the soldiers by Christmas.
The Angel Tree has been set up in the back of the sanctuary with a limited number of angels for adoption. More angels will appear each Sunday until all have been adopted. This year, Bethel has added eight "elderly angels" to the Christmas tree that need sponsors. They can be identified by the “E” in front of their number. The Mission Outreach Committee also needs food donations for 40 baskets. Our distribution date is Saturday, December 16. In the past, Bethel has very generously supported this project and we hope the same will happen again this year.
The December Open Door Newsletter deadline is Monday, November 27.

Last Sunday it was announced that Bethel would establish a fund to assist John and Sue Carter with mounting out-of-pocket medical expenses. After the service it was called to my attention that to mention anyone’s name specifically, even though the check was made to Bethel, raises concerns with the IRS. Therefore, please note “Local Health” on your check and we will know where to allocate the funds. Let it be known that we do this in honor of Sue Carter.
Roane Choral Society presents "Messiah!" The chorus will be joined by the Farragut Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and the University of Tennessee Concert Choir along with orchestra for two performances of this masterwork. Begin your seasonal celebration by attending on Friday, December 1 at 8:00 p.m. at South Harriman Baptist Church or on Sunday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Farragut Presbyterian Church.

It’s Almost Time . . .
On Sunday, December 3, it will be time for Bethel’s all-church
Hanging of the Greens
In one wonderful (and busy!) afternoon and evening, we will:
- Decorate the Education Building and outside of Sanctuary
- Erect a life-size Nativity
- Share in a time of fellowship and craft-making activities for all ages and skill levels
- Decorate cupcakes to commemorate the birthday of Jesus
- Share a meal of soup and sandwiches
- Form a procession to the church for a special worship service, during which we will decorate the inside of the church and the sanctuary Christmas tree.
This year there will be a special emphasis on our prayers for peace, beginning in the Bethel church family, and extending throughout the world.
We will begin gathering at 3:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to join in we will need ALL your helping hands!
Please see the sign-up sheet on the reverse to see how you can help out.
