TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

The Service For The Lord’s Day
Bethel Presbyterian Church
Christ the King Sunday
November 26, 2006
11:00 a.m.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,

the world, and those who live in it.

Praise the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty -

Praise to the One who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood; who made us to be a kingdom, priests serving God the Father -

Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, the ruler of all rulers of the earth -

To Christ be glory and dominion forever and ever!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #151   Crown Him with Many Crowns   Diademata

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Almighty God, in power and in love you have exalted the Son, Jesus Christ, to reign with you in eternal glory. We confess our resistance to Christ’s rule: our slowness to respond in faith, our disobedience to your will, our reluctance to proclaim your truth, our complicity with the powers of this world. By the power of your sovereign love vanquish our sin and claim us anew. Rule in us, that our lives would conform with your gracious will and our service further Christ’s reign on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   To God Be the Glory Hymn #485 Refrain

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory: great things He hath done!

FIRST LESSON   2 Samuel 23:1-7

ANTHEM

SECOND LESSON   Revelation 1:4b-8

SERMON Christ the King   Rev. Bill Shenk

*HYMN #142   All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name!   Coronation

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We are certain that Jesus lives. He lives as God with us, touching all of human life with the presence of God. He lives as one of us with God. Because he shares our humanity and has bound us to himself in love, we have an advocate in the innermost life of God. We declare that Jesus is Lord. His resurrection is a decisive victory over the powers that deform and destroy human life. We maintain that ultimate sovereignty now belongs to Jesus Christ in every sphere of life. Jesus is Lord! He has been Lord from the beginning. He will be Lord at the end. Even now he is Lord. Amen.

SHARING OF PRAYER CONCERNS

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

*DOXOLOGY   Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Hymn #592

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN #423   Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun   Duke Street

*CHARGE AND BLESSING

And the people said
Amen.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Hymn #485 vs. 1

To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory, great things He hath done!
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory: great things He hath done!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Angel Tree

The Angel Tree has been set up in the back of the sanctuary with a limited number of angels for adoption. More angels will appear each Sunday until all have been adopted. This year, Bethel has added eight "elderly angels" to the Christmas tree that need sponsors.  They can be identified by the “E” in front of their number.  The Mission Outreach Committee also needs food donations for 40 baskets.  Our distribution date is Saturday, December 16.  In the past, Bethel has very generously supported this project and we hope the same will happen again this year.

First Saturday Series

The first Saturday Series will continue on December 2, with a presentation by David Gaffin (Marilyn’s son), who is a senior forecaster with the Weather Service at Morristown. David is going to explain to us why it is so difficult to predict accurately the weather in East Tennessee and the surrounding area. The meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and light refreshments will be served. Y’ALL COME!!!

Paperback Book Donations Needed

Joni Morgan is asking for donations of used paperback books to send to our soldiers in Iraq. They have a very poor selection and what they do have are pretty worn out.  Science fiction, westerns, thrillers, historical fiction, general novels and non-fiction would all be appreciated. Please drop off your donations in the designated box in the room below the sanctuary no later than next Sunday, December 3 so they can get to the soldiers by Christmas.

Circle II Cookie Exchange

Circle II of Bethel Presbyterian Women will meet on Tuesday, December 5, at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a “Cookie Exchange” and Carol Sing. All the women in the church are invited to come and bring a dozen cookies to eat (with coffee and tea), and a dozen cookies to exchange.

Book Discussion Group

There will not be a meeting in November for Bethel’s Book Discussion Group. We will meet on December 7 for an early Christmas celebration at Joni Morgan’s home. Everyone who enjoys good fellowship and a lively discussion is invited to attend. For this meeting you should bring: a book (new or used), gift wrapped for a gift exchange, a salad or dessert to go with Joni’s soup, and ideas for books you’d like to discuss in the coming year.

Doris Barber, Sue Carter, Wanda Carter, Roberta Cash, William Condon, Al & Dot Davis, Marc Sherrod, Anne Smith, Justin Trivette, Ginny Warlick, John Will, Christine Woods
