TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 29, 2004

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

The whole earth is full of God’s glory.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP   Psalm 100:1,2,5

God broods over the waters of life and brings order out of chaos.

We welcome the creating God to be lively in our bodies and minds.

With our imaginations and all of our senses, we experience Holy Presence.

We are here to listen for God’s guidance and to support one another through the down-sides of life.

Together we can be still; together we can listen;

And together we can respond by caring for the earth, our neighbors and our children.

We will honor God with our decisions and our actions.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 288  I Sing the Mighty Power of God    Ellacombe

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Living God – we long to be whole. Search us and erase the attitudes which diminish your work among us. Reveal those frustrations which drain our hopes; set us free from anxiety. Forgive our lack of focus and our resistance to possibilities. With your strong love and radiance, work among us till we are wholly refreshed. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   Col. 1:15-20

Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible. All things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn of the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

HELP BEGINS AT HOME – The Bethel Learning Center Visioning Group needs your input. We would like to explore helping Bethel members with their familiarity and comfort using computers. We have not determined exactly how we might do this but the first step begins with assessing need and resources. At the rear of the sanctuary are two sign up sheets—one for those who desire some instruction, a second for those who would be willing to help others. If we see that we are filling a need among Bethel members, we will explore expanding to others. Thanks.
