TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Give thanks in all circumstances;

for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

To your name, Lord Jesus, help me to bow the knee

and all its worshiping,

bow the head

and all its thinking,

bow the will

and all its choosing,

bow the heart

and all its loving.

Let us worship God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN #483   Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above   Mit Freuden Zart

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

Life-giving God, giver of every good and perfect gift, we have missed and misunderstood your blessings. We stuff our lives with possessions, our schedules with busyness, our bodies with excess, but these things leave us empty. Distracted by the immediate, we overlook the eternal. In our pride we try to manufacture our fulfillment rather than receive it as your gift. In your mercy, Lord, forgive us. Satisfy our hungers with the bread of heaven; slake our thirsts and your living water. Satisfy us with your love, that obeying your will and serving your glory may fill us till we want no more, we pray through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

*WORDS OF ASSURANCE

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   Gloria Patri   Hymn #578

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

GREETING FROM THE PRESBYTERY OF EAST TENNESSEE   Molly Garnett

FIRST LESSON   Psalm 57

ANTHEM

SECOND LESSON   Mark 10:17-31

SERMON   There’s Always Something   Rev. Bill Shenk

*HYMN #357    O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee Maryton

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostle’s Creed (Traditional) Hymnal Page #14

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

SHARING OF PRAYER CONCERNS

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER

DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*HYMN #478   Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven   Lauda Anima

*CHARGE AND BLESSING

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE   In Christ There Is No East or West

In Christ there is no east or west,
In Him no south or north;
But one great fellowship of love
Throughout the whole wide earth.

In Christ now meet both east and west,

All Christly souls are one in Him
Throughout the whole wide earth.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fall Church Hike

Join us this afternoon for a hike up the Schoolhouse Gap Trail. We’ll gather at Bethel immediately after worship with sack lunches and carpool to the trailhead, picnicking together somewhere along the way. This is not a strenuous hike. The trail itself should be relatively easy with good footing along its 2.2 mile length up the 600 foot climb. We’ll return back to the cars downhill along the same trail and head back to Kingston together. Be sure to bring plenty of liquid for the trip and join us to see the fall colors!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Tom and Helen Roostee who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this Tuesday, October 17!

5th Sunday Worship

Anyone wishing to attend the 5th Sunday worship service at Morgan County Regional Prison on October 29th should let Karen Schall know after worship today.

Flu Shots are Coming!

Flu shots will be available at Bethel next Sunday, October 22nd. Our Parish Nurse, Deb Hyder, will be giving the shots in the Fellowship Hall from 9 – 10 a.m. The shots will cost $12. Be sure to ward off the flu this year - plan to get your shot at Bethel. If you are allergic to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to flu shots you should not get the shot.

Thank you

My family and I wish to sincerely thank our Bethel Family for their prayers, support, cards, letters and the wonderful food during our time of grief. Your kindness and support will always be remembered as the bridge that supported us during our sad time. – Bonnie Anderson, Michael Anderson, Truman D. Anderson, Jr., and Gretchen Scofield.

Usher Chart

Thank you to the people who signed up to be ushers in October. We are still in need of Ushers for Sunday mornings in November and December. Please take a minute after worship today to sign up on the chart in the back of the Sanctuary. For more information, contact Alicia in the church office.
