TO OUR GUESTS, we extend a warm welcome. We invite you to participate in signing our Friendship Folder, adding your address and phone number if you'd like to receive our church newsletter or a pastoral call. When we pray the Lord's Prayer at Bethel, we say "sins...sin against us" rather than "debts..." or "trespasses..."; during "a time for sharing" we welcome prayer requests from the congregation. On first Sundays each month, all who put their trust in Christ and who have received baptism in any Christian church are invited to share his sacred meal. We are glad you are with us. Please come again.

THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 26, 2003

GREETING, WORDS OF WELCOME, RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

PRELUDE       A Crown of Beauty       Southbridge

CALL TO WORSHIP – Hebrews 12:1-2

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
Let us also lay aside every weight
And the sin that clings so closely,
And let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

*HYMN # 260  A Mighty Fortress Is Our God  Ein’ Feste Burg

*A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION

*UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN

God of our Ancestors: you raised up brave and able persons to reform the church. We confess that we have lost our way again, and need new reformation. We are content with easy religion, with too much money and too little charity; we cultivate indifference. Lord, let your word shake us up, and your Spirit renew us, so that we may repent, have better faith, and never shrink from sacrifice; in the name of Jesus Christ our only Lord and Savior. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you:
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling    Hyfrydol    Hymnal p.376, v. 4

Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Heidelberg Catechism, 1563

Q. 1. What is your only comfort, in life and in death?

A. That I belong–body and soul, in life and in death–not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Q. 2. How many things must you know that you may live and die in the blessedness of this comfort?

A. Three. First, the greatness of my sin and wretchedness. Second, how I am freed from all my sins and their wretched consequences. Third, what gratitude I owe to God for such redemption.
